High resolution transrectal sonography was performed in 233 patients for evaluaton of the prostate over a period of recent 19 months. The authors analized snographic findings of-histologically proven 42 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia
and 14
with carcinoma retrosepctively for differential diagnosis. Four patients who show prostatic mass with osteoblastic bone metastasis, elevated serum acid phosphatase level and lymphadenopathy were included into carcinoma group also. Shape and
capsule
of
the prostate, and location. Margin, echotexture, hypoechoic halo around the nodule. Calcification, cyst of the nodule were evaluated. Although there were some overlap of sonographic findngs. we concluded that asymmetrical enlargement of the
prostate
with capsular disruption, diffuse mixed or hypoechoic nodule with poorly defined margin and central calcificacion were more suggestive of carcinoma. Intact prostatic capsule, centraiiy located nodule with clear margin, hypoechoic halo and
marginal
calcification were nore suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
